ArrowMailer SE
ArrowMailer SE (Special Edition) is a new version of the ArrowMailer program included with Arrow. The Special Edition version of ArrowMailer does not support sending messages directly to a subscriber, but does offer several
potential improvements over the mailer built into Arrow.
Specifically, ArrowMailer SE is designed to address the problems some Arrow users have had sending messages.
ArrowMailer SE "tests" every recipient's address before sending messages. You can specify how often addresses are tested. If an address fails the test, it is removed from any recipient list in which it appears. Later,
ArrowMailer SE will retest the address and if it doesn't fail, ArrowMailer SE will resume sending messages to the Address.
If an error occurs while sending a message, ArrowMailer SE will hold the message and try again later.
Arrow Mailer SE allows you to specify the maximum number of messages to be sent in a single SMTP session. It also allows you to specify a delay between messages and a delay between sessions.
To use ArrowMailer SE you must have already installed the beta version (1.3.10 or 1.3.11) of Arrow. Select the following link to download the setup program.
arrowmailer_se_1_99.exe
This is version 1.99.14 of ArrowMailer. See the "ArrowMailer Version History" page for details.
After you have downloaded the setup program, run it to install ArrowMailer SE. Be sure to install ArrowMailer SE in the same directory where you installed Arrow (usually c:\program files\arrow\).
Configure ArrowMailer SE
After you've installed ArrowMailer SE, run the program by selecting "Programs" then "Arrow" then "ArrowMailer" from Windows' Start Menu.
When ArrowMailer starts, it is in its "Starting" state. In this state, ArrowMailer allows you to select menu items and click toolbar buttons. But, after a pause in activity, it enters the "Running"
state in which it will not respond to menu commands and toolbar clicks (except for the "Pause" command and "Pause" button).
In "Running" state ArrowMailer SE gets messages for Arrow and delivers messages sent by Arrow.
Set Up SMTP Server
In ArrowMailer SE, select "Pause" from the "Running" menu.
This puts ArrowMailer SE into it's "Paused" state. Select "Preferences" from the "File" menu. Click the "Server" tab. Select "Server Name" from the list. Double-click "Server Name" or select "Edit" from the "Preferences" menu or click the "Edit" button to edit the value of the "Server Name" preference.
Enter the name of your SMTP server. The name is usually the same name as your domain but sometimes it is something like "smtp-server" or it is your domain with a prefix like "mail." or "smtp.".
If you do not know the name of your SMTP server then please ask your ISP or system administrator.
Select "HELO Domain" from the tree on the left then enter the name of your domain. This should usually be the same name as the domain part of your SMTP server's name. For example, if your SMTP server is named
"mail.domain.com" then the "HELO Domain" should be set to "domain.com".
Select "From Address" from the tree on the left then enter an email address in the same domain as the SMTP server. This is the address used in the "envelope" of messages sent to the SMTP server. This address is
not displayed in messages sent by ArrowMailer SE, but it may be the address to which "bounce" messages are returned by the SMTP server.
Add POP3 Accounts
If you would like to have ArrowMailer SE get messages for Arrow, add POP3 accounts to ArrowMailer SE. Add each account that will receive messages for any of your lists. To add a new POP3 account, select "POP3 Accounts"
from the "File" menu. Then select "Add" from the "POP3 Accounts" menu.
The "Add POP3" window is displayed. Enter the name of the POP3 server (it's usually just the name of your ISP's domain or your ISP's domain name preceeded by "mail." or "pop3."). If you do
not know the name of the POP3 server, please ask your ISP or system administrator.
Enter the user ID of the POP3 account.
This is sometimes refered to as the "account name" or "account ID." Often, but not always, this is the same as the first part of your email address (up to the "@" symbol).
Enter the password for the account.
Click the OK button to add the POP3 account to ArrowMailer's list of POP3 accounts.
Set Arrow to Use ArrowMailer SE
In Arrow, Select "Preferences" from the "File" menu. Click the "Advanced" tab then select "Use ArrowMailer" from the list. Set the value to "Yes."
Select "Start ArrowMailer" from the list. Select "2 - Start in Local Mode".
If you've set ArrowMailer SE to get messages for Arrow, then for each of your lists in Arrow, select the list. Then choose "Properties" from the "List" menu. Click the "Advanced" tab.
Select "Don't Check Mail" from the list and set the value to "Yes."
Exit Arrow and exit ArrowMailer SE. Then run Arrow. When Arrow starts, it will start ArrowMailer SE.
Please send a test message to your list(s) to ensure that the settings are correct. Instead of sending the message itself, Arrow will pass the message to ArrowMailer. You can watch as ArrowMailer receives and process the message
by double-clicking the ArrowMailer icon in the Task Bar or System Tray to restore ArrowMailer's window.
The first time you use ArrowMailer it may take much longer to send messages because ArrowMailer is testing each e-mail address.
When sending messages, Arrow will display a "Type Mismatch" error message in its log. Please ignore this error message. It does not seem to affect the sending of messages or the operation of Arrow.
If you have any questions or problems using ArrowMailer feel free to send an e-mail message to arrow@jadebox.com or post a message to the Arrow mailing list. To join the list, please send a message with just SUBSCRIBE as the Subject to ArrowList@jadebox.com.
